Volunteer Opportunities

Hesed House would not be able to minister to our poorest neighbors every day of the year without its invaluable 6,000 volunteers who touch the lives of hundreds of individuals and families each year by reaching out in a variety of ways: helping to prepare food and prepare and serve meals, conducting building projects, cleaning, painting, and landscaping. Others with special skills and talents help by tutoring, giving haircuts, conducting computer training or organizing food, school supplies and clothing drives.

We are frequently asked the appropriate age for children to participate in volunteer activities. Experience in this area leads us to recommend that children under the age of 12 require substantial adult supervision and may not be appropriate to serve in the PADS programs. Adolescents must be accompanied by an adult. Children are the responsibility of the adults in the group for supervision and safety.

Because the Holiday Season brings calls from hundreds of individuals, families and groups wanting to volunteer, holiday openings are generally filled by November 1st. So we strongly encourage you to call early to reserve a volunteer space and MOST IMPORTANTLY, please remember that Hesed House needs volunteers long after the holiday gifts are opened.

Hesed House welcomes additional volunteer help from local businesses, organizations and service groups.

Volunteer Application Process

How do I begin the process for volunteering?

Please contact our Director of Volunteers at: 630–897–2165 ext. 538 or at bthurlby@hesedhouse.org

Barb maintains the schedule for individual volunteers, volunteer groups, open dates where extra help is needed and all volunteer–related projects.

Volunteer Applications can be downloaded here (individual application, group application) and returned to the Director of Volunteers.

Applications can also be requested by phone which will then be mailed or faxed to you.

Please remember that Hesed House is not able to accept requests for court ordered service. And in cases where volunteer projects involve interaction with children, background checks of applicants will be conducted prior to approving volunteer service. Hesed House and the Kane County Health Department require all volunteers to register in advance of, or upon arrival at Hesed House, for their volunteer service. The contact information you provide will be used for emergency notification purposes, and not shared with outside sources.
